The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will be a celebration for all those who are passionate about sport. The Games will be an opportunity to showcase Australian values to the world, to demonstrate our unity, commitment, can-do attitude, friendliness and good humour.
Volunteers are a vital part of everyday Australian life through their selfless service. The Australian Government’s support for the Melbourne 2006 Volunteer Program is an acknowledgment of the critical role that volunteers will have in ensuring the success of the Games. Volunteers will also be well supported by the Volunteer Sponsor Family and the Victorian Government, the Host Government for the Games.
The level of interest and enthusiasm in volunteering at the Games has been overwhelming. In March 2006 Victoria will be buzzing with the energy of up to 15,000 volunteers, working together to deliver a unique and successful Commonwealth Games experience.
Applications to become a volunteer for the Games closed in early 2005. Once again, we would like to thank all those who expressed interest in becoming a Games volunteer and for their willingness to contribute their time and energy to ensure the success of this magnificent event.
Information provided in the following pages is designed to keep you up to date with the progress of our Games Volunteers and, for those who wish to contribute to the Games effort, pathways to related volunteer and community-based opportunities.
Whilst I have represented my country in many sporting teams from the Commonwealth Games to the Olympic Games, they could not have been made possible without the valuable support of Volunteers. From my beginnings at local athletics tracks in Queensland, to Commonwealth and Olympic Games, Volunteers truly made those events run smoothly and their contribution was recognised by all.
Sport is a wonderful thing... and Melbourne is a wonderful city for sport. But above all, sport is about people, people taking part.
I have Volunteered as a patron of the Volunteer Program for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games because I want to help make it great. I hope you will be a part of it too.
There is no greater thrill in sport than to represent your country, especially at large international events. I have been lucky enough to captain the Australian basketball team at the Olympics and elsewhere. Although the spotlight focuses on the court, I would not have been able to perform at my peak without the help I received from Volunteers.
As a Volunteer at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, like an athlete you will be representing your country, using your skills and personality to make everyone a winner.
I have volunteered as a Patron of the Volunteer Program because I come from Melbourne and I believe in the Games. I know that the people of this great city, as well as from the rest of Victoria and Australia will unite behind the Games as Volunteers and do us proud.
